This survey is open to all undergraduates, postgraduates, online students and PhD researchers at the University of Edinburgh.

Please take a few minutes to complete a survey on ‘managing your digital footprint’. This is the second digital footprint survey and we would appreciate you taking the time to complete this survey, even if you completed an earlier survey in semester 1. In doing so, this will help us to understand how you are using the internet, specifically social media, and how you approach the management of your digital footprint (online presence).

At the end of the survey you have the option of entering into the prize draw in order to win one of three £10 book tokens.

Top Tips – Creating an effective online presence

Creating an effective online presence isn’t always easy, so where should you start?socialmedia

  • Consider who your audience/readers are
  • Consider multiple platforms/social media, if appropriate
  • Create an about me/profile page
  • Select a suitable/eye catching image/logo/photo
  • Connect/friend/follow others to widen your network
  • Respond to tweets/comments/posts in a timely manner
  • Include images, hashtags, useful information
  • Evaluate your online presence and modify/update where needed
  • Consider your digital footprint – manage your privacy settings, and don’t say/post/share anything you will regret!

About the campaign

On 29 Septefoundafootmber 2014 the ‘managing your digital footprint’ campaign launches. The campaign is for all University of Edinburgh students (UG, PGT, ODL, PhD) and is being led by the Institute for Academic Development in collaboration with Edina, the Careers Service, EUSA, Information Services, Student Information Points, and other University departments.

There will be various competitions (win a Kindle, book tokens and more), activities, workshops, resources and advice throughout 2014-2015, which will focus on how to create and manage a positive online presence (digital footprint), which could assist with:

  • professional networking
  • finding the right job
  • collaborating with others
  • keeping safe online
  • managing your privacy and the privacy of others
  • how to set up effective social media profiles
  • using social media for research and impact
