Information Security Awareness Week 2-6 October 2017

The week will focus on why information matters to all University staff and students, the threats that we all face as users, and how you can take some very simple steps to quickly protect your personal data and research content.

We will also be active on Twitter during the week, with hints, tips and useful guidance. Follow us on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/UoEInfoSec and with #UoEInfoSec.

Further information will be posted on http://www.ed.ac.uk/infosec and Twitter as we announce it.

Reflecting on Digital Footprint

“Over the last year or so Louise Connelly and I have been busy developing a Digital Footprint MOOC building on our previous research, training and best practice work and share this with the world. We designed a three week MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) that runs on a rolling basis on Coursera – a new session kicks off every month. The course launched this April and we were delighted to see it get some fantastic participant feedback and some fantastic press coverage…

… Also in June our article (in Vol. 11, No. 1, October 2015) for ALISS Quarterly, the journal of the Association of Librarians and Information Professionals in the Social Sciences, had been awarded Best Article of the Year. Huge thanks to the lovely folks at ALISS – this was lovely recognition for our article, which [you] can read in full in the ALISS Quarterly archive”

Contribute to research

The following is for the attention of participants who have completed the Digital Footprint MOOC, which can be found here: www.coursera.org/learn/digital-footprint/

Dear MOOC learner,

I am a post-graduate student at the University of Edinburgh, UK. As part of my research, I am examining learners’ participation and success in MOOCs. I hope that my research will provide the basis for recommendations on how to enhance the learning outcomes of those participating in MOOCs.

If you are in the final stage of this MOOC, I am inviting you to participate in my research study by completing a survey, which will require approximately 10 minutes to complete.

The data collected by this study will provide useful information on the effectiveness of MOOCs as an educational platform, and will thereby help to identify how the learning experiences of MOOC participants like you and me can be enhanced. Thank you for taking the time to assist me in my educational endeavors. Your participation is much appreciated.

To complete the survey, please click here or go to https://edinburgh.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/mooc.

“Last Monday we launched the new Digital Footprint MOOC, a free three week online course (running on Coursera) led by myself and Louise Connelly (Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies). The course builds upon our work on the Managing Your Digital Footprints research project, campaign and also draws on some of the work I’ve been doing in piloting a Digital Footprint training and consultancy service at EDINA.”

Digital Footprint Course

DF MOOC logoNew free online course to help you manage your online presence (digital footprint)

The University of Edinburgh Digital Footprint MOOC (on Coursera), focuses on the different dimensions of a digital footprint, including developing an effective online presence, managing privacy online, creating opportunities for networking, balancing and managing professional and personal presences (eprofessionalism). By the end of the course participants should be confident in managing a digital footprint that works for them, whether it’s small and private, or a more effective and impactful presence.

As we move around the online world we leave tracks and traces of our activity all the time: social media accounts, tagged images, professional presences, scraps of text, but also many artefacts we don’t always realise we are leaving behind, or that others leave about us.  This course includes a range of experts from across the world, practical advice, as well as providing an opportunity to reflect on and refine your own online presence and digital footprint.

The course starts 3 April 2017. Register now https://goo.gl/jgHLQs

Why privacy matters

We all talk about privacy but does it really matter?

Watch Glenn Greenwald’s Ted Talk – ‘Why privacy matters’ (Oct 2014)

“Glenn Greenwald was one of the first reporters to see — and write about — the Edward Snowden files, with their revelations about the United States’ extensive surveillance of private citizens. In this searing talk, Greenwald makes the case for why you need to care about privacy, even if you’re “not doing anything you need to hide.” [Extract from YouTube]
